O envelhecimento da população é um desafio para a sociedade atual. No Brasil e na Região Nordeste os segmentos idosos são cada vez mais relevantes, influenciando as políticas públicas, as relações de gênero e gerações na família e na sociedade. Este artigo faz uma breve revisão da literatura e apóia-se em dados empíricos para analisar inovações nas relações familiares das camadas populares, quando a família se organiza sob a direção da pessoa idosa, buscando alternativas para a vida cotidiana.

FAMILY AND THE ELDERLY IN BRAZILIAN NORTHEAST


The aging of the population is a challenge for the present society. In Brazil and in the Northeast region the segments of the elderly are becoming more relevant, influencing the public policies and the gender and generation relationships in the family and in the society. Based on empirical data, this paper makes a brief revision of the literature, analyzing the innovations in the family relationships in the popular layers, when the family is organized under the supervision of an old person, searching for everyday life alternatives.
